Course Notes - Introduction

Luke

In the late 1990’s LucasArts took a different step with its Star Wars games, fresh off creating flightsims such as TIE Fighter and First-Person shoot-em-ups such as Dark Forces, they took the next logical step and created a strategy game.

However while they succeeded in creating a good strategy game, most of the gaming community labelled the game a failure, and not fun and to be honest quite boring, lacking a true combat feel.

So accepting these criticism LucasArts went back to further developing the story lines to other Star Wars games (X-wing Series and Jedi Knight Series).

However for the many who disliked the game and left it on their shelves getting dusty or those who didn’t even bother buying it, there was still a small percentage of people who actually did enjoy the game. Sure it wasn’t as exciting as flying around in a Tie Defender, or shooting Dark Troopers, but it was different, it made you think as one mistake at one point could alter the rest of the game, and as each and every game was in-fact different, it provided endless possibilities.

So this percentage of people played Rebellion, not only in single player but also on the Zone once Microsoft added it to the game list, and Lucas Arts released a patch which made multiplayer much better and less buggy.

In the following course, you will find everything you need to know about the game, and many things you probably didn’t know existed.

The Test has been updated and now more of the questions require you to think, copying answers directly from the text will gain you little points, not enough for a pass at least.

Also for the benefit of everyone, there is a page in the text where I will upload any hints and tricks people have had with the game, as well as the official and unofficial help guides.

Plotline:

Rebellion is a game that sets you as overlord of either the Empire or the Rebels.

The game is set just after the Death Star above the jungle moon of Yavin was destroyed with the rebels feeling cocky and the Empire gunning for revenge.

The game is strategy-based and contains two main parts: - the Main screen which is based around trying to conquer the galaxy (and where you control everything) and the combat screen which is based around fleet to fleet engagements which can range from a couple of Corvettes and a Dreadnaught fighting a Interdictor to whole fleets of Super Star Destroyers and TIE Defenders fighting the huge Mon Calamari Cruisers. To win success is only needed on the Main screen, but by not playing the combat you are missing one of the best parts of the game.

How to win
VaderThe game can be won in two ways (depending on game settings), by capturing the two enemies leaders and their HQ or by conquering the whole galaxy. This is the most important thing to remember as capturing two people and one world is easy, bringing the whole galaxy under your rule is not so easy. How do you achieve these objectives? By use of three vital tools: Characters, Fleets and Planets. Master these tools and you will master the game
