1) The Terminology
The following list is some basic terminology used in the graphics world.
Width the measurement across a picture
Height - the measurement down a picture
Pixels a unit of measurement
Points unit of measurement for fonts
Resolution this is very important, as it will determine the file size (and therefore, download speed) of your graphic. The higher the resolution, the bigger the file size, BUT, the higher the resolution, the more smooth and professional your graphic looks. The web standard is 72 pixels per inch (or dpi).
RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue, meaning that all the colours you use in your graphic will be made up from a combination of these three colours (for monitor display purposes anyway). Not to be confused with the Primary Colours.
Primary Colours Red, Blue and Yellow are the primary colours. They cannot be "made up" or created by combining other colours.
Palette a set of colours
Hue The shade of a colour which enables us to classify it, eg. red, green or yellow
Saturation The intensity (or brightness or dullness) of a colour. Saturated colours appear richer and brighter.
Three of the most likely Graphics tasks you'll get:
Splash image - An image used as an entrance to a website. This is used to create a pause before the real website, and is often used to show off talent. (Explained in detail later)
Layout - A layout is an image which looks like a website, and is cut up and used on a website (Explained in detail later)
Banner - Generally a rectangle with the lenght being horizontal, the banner is the staple for most graphics work, especially for squadrons, and sometimes as advertising. (Explained in detail later)
